Cable release

By far, the easiest way to attach a cable release is to use the Holga Cable Release Accessory. These are readily available on eBay, but that isn't the only way to do it. You can also glue a threaded nut, that a cable release can fit into, onto your Holga, or Toby Keller came up with a pretty sweet non-destructive method using a clamp:

The Holga cable release accessory

As far as I can tell, the Holga Cable Release accessory is official and will fit any 120 Holga (although not the TLR, or WPC). The accessory attaches over the front of the Holga and allows you to use a standard cable release. The only caveat is that it is a bit of a struggle changing the bulb slider once it's on.

There are two models of the accessory - one built for older Holgas and one that works on both older Holgas and post-2009 updated models. The only real difference is the cut-out on the bottom. Luckily, it seems like it would be easy to modify the old accessories to accommodate new Holgas.

Hacking the old Cable Release Accessory

If you have the older style cable release accessory, but you have one of the newer models, don't worry - it's pretty easy to modify your existing accessory. You will need:

  • A junior hacksaw
  • Some files, or sandpaper
  • A vice (optional)

You can probably modify the accessory using just a sharp craft knife, but as the plastic is so easy to saw, it's probably safer to use a saw. If you do not own a vice you can simply hold the accessory in place while you work. It might make it a little trickier though. This hack should take about 10 minutes to perform. It's not pretty, but it does the job!
